Flexible design of twin screw pumps thanks to a wide range of different pitches
Large pitch / chambers
Screws with a large pitch or large chambers are particularly well suited for pumping media with large solids such as fruit or pieces of fruits without damaging them. The large chambers allow a large amount of medium to pass through the pump per revolution, which means that a high volume flow can also be achieved with large chambers. The main advantage is the low shear of the medium. Due to the large chambers, the medium passes through fewer chambers and has a shorter dwell time from the inlet to the outlet of the pump. In addition, fewer revolutions are required for pumping the medium out of the pump again. Disadvantage: The larger the pitch of the screw, the lower the maximum allowable pressure the pump can generate.
Small pitch, easy-to-use screws
Particularly small pitches are used when the pump is required to build up a high pressure difference. The smaller chambers allow the volume flow and pressure to be regulated very well and precisely. This prevents pressure and flow fluctuations. There are always several chambers connected in series here. This results in significantly less backflow and higher efficiency; the larger sealing surface between the pressure and suction sides is the key factor in this.
Double-start screws
If particularly high volume flows are required, feed screws with a double-start thread are also available. In this design, two feed threads are intertwined. Due to the double-start thread, these screws can achieve significantly higher displacement of volume per revolution in the chambers compared to screws with a single-start thread. However, a disadvantage of this variant is that this design is not suitable for pumping media containing solids. Higher internal backflow than with large, single-start feed screws, as there is even less sealing surface between the pressure and suction sides.
